JAEWOO KIM

Born in Korea, Jaewoo Kim moved to Queensland in 1993 to study at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. He completed his Bachelor of Music and post-graduate diploma at the Canberra School of Music and was winner of Opera Foundation’s Metropolitan Opera Awards, a contestant in the finals in New York in 1997, winner of the McDonalds Aria in 2000, and winner of the Australian Singing Competition 2002 Glyndebourne Festival Opera Award. Jaewoo was a member of Opera Australia's Young Artists' Development Program in 1998 and a principal artist for the company from 2000.

Engagements have included the role of Ottavio in Don Giovanni for Opera Australia in Melbourne, Tamino in The Magic Flute for Lyric Opera Productions in Dublin, Alfredo in La Traviata for Longborough Opera and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. This year’s performances include Ferrando in Così fan tutte and Orphee in Orphee Aux Enfers for Diva Opera in the UK. More recently Jaewoo Kim has sung Tamino in The Magic Flute, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte and Gerald in a new production of Lakmé in Melbourne and Sydney for Opera Australia, Gerald in Lakmé in New Zealand for Canterbury Opera, Arbace in a touring production of Idomeneo in Italy and Ottavio in Don Giovanni and the title role in Faust for NBR New Zealand Opera. More recent concert engagements include Cassio in Otello and Beethoven Symphony No. 9 under the baton of Oleg Caetani for Melbourne Symphony, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 conducted by Gianluigi Gelmetti for Sydney Symphony, Messiah with Sydney Philharmonia and Melbourne Symphony, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 for the Queensland Orchestra conducted by Michael Christie, Haydn’s The Creation for Opera Queensland, Haydn’s Nelson Mass for Tasmanian Symphony, a lunchtime recital for broadcast on ABC Radio, Shepherd/Sailor in Tristan and Isolde for Queensland Music Festival and Opera in the Vineyard in Queensland.

2010 Jaewoo is singing Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with English National Opera, UK and also singing at the ENO’s annual gala concert in February.
